I always say the best chocolate is the one you enjoy the most. I say this because I own Chatham's Fine Chocolates in Scottsdale, Arizona. We carry individual truffles by B.T. McElrath, Ghyslain, Amedei, Neuhaus, Nirvana, Chocolat Moderne, Lille Belle Farms, Charles Chocolates, Wen Chocolates, Michel Cluizel, Le Grand Confectionary, Knipschildt Chocolatier, Xocoatl and others.

For me, the greatest reward is seeing all of the awesome American chocolatiers being so creative. They have bold and interesting flavors: several with Chili, lots of herbs (Rosemary, Cardamom, Lemon Verbena), different teas.

We started this business for two reasons. First, we were frustrated chocoholics and wanted great chocolate. Second, we knew there were great artisan chocolatiers out there and that they needed someone with a big mouth to tell the world about them.

BTW: our website should be live by July 20, 2007. The address is www.ChathamsFineChocolates.com

Chocolate is always better when it's shared with someone you love!!

For non-truffles style chocolate, you really should try this new entry to the US market: Patchi.

This brand is 30 years old, but rarely found in the US or Canada. Now they have a site to order from. Their chocolate is considered "Belgian style". It is beyond Schraffen Berger in quality of chocolate, and beats La Maison du Chocolat with the variety, taste, and most certainly the packaging.

Do try the dark chocolate with Pistachio (Emotion), or even the dark with realy smooth coconut paste (Cocotine). They do an awesome job with Gianduja paste too.

I recently opened a store in Dallas and searched for a year for great chocolates. My favorite truffle had been La Maison du Chocolate until I tasted Wiseman House's Wild Woman Truffle. I was absolutely won over! I now only sell Wiseman House Truffles because I haven't been able to find anything else to compare and his sipping chocolate is divine. Whenever we have a tasting everyone partakes and loves the chocolates. If you are interested I don't ship you need to go to Kevin's site. I also love the lemon curd and lemon/raspberry filled chocolates from Custom Candy Design in Northbrook, IL. I am working on selling chocolate by the piece so that I can sell their filled chocolates. I also like Lillie Belle Farms Lavender Caramel that I tried while vacationing in Phoenix at Chatham's Fine Chocolates.

I recently had to go on a torcherous diet for health reasons. During the diet I went a bit chocolate crazy and began a search for the best chocolate I would be able to eat after the diet. I happened upon the Tuescher chocolate company. Their champagne truffle is amazing. I have tried many chocolates in my life and even worked for a few companies and nothing compares.

Brown Paper Chocolates offers some of the most sophisticated and usual flavors out there. Founded by a chef who enjoyed "playing around" with chocolate recipes, he had an idea of creating chocolates with fresh, non-processed gourmet ingredients. Using Milk, Dark or White chocolate as a base, some of his flavor combinations include ancho chiles and tequila with Dark chocolate and lavender and Pimm's No. 1 with white chocolate. They're amazing on their own, topped on a dessert or with a glass of vino.

My favorite is Fiori Chocolatiers. I used to but their chocolates in Seattle, but now purchase online from their website. Their drinking chocolate is just the finest made.

My second fav would have to be Rechiutti in SF. Wonderful stuff.

I have never met a chocolate I did not devour I love any and all chocolate, esspecally dark chocolate, although I do like truffles they are a bit to expensive for how long they last... not long. Today I was at Walmart with my boyfriend and I wanted to get a bag of candy bars but the last we got any, he ate all his Reeces, then turned on my three Muskateers. I might as well stick to dark chocolate, he does not tend to eat those I have noticed. By the way, what is so great about Lindor they have to price them so highly? I know the packaging is pricy but jeez

I live in Bozeman and have had the local chocolate. However, I must admit that drive to missoula twice a month and stock up on truffles and pastries from Posh chocolat(www.poshchocolat.com) They ARE the best!!! I love the Ragusa Delice and Torino Tentation pralines at The Swiss Bakery in Washington, DC or online at www.theswissbakery.com. The fillings are decadent. The Ragusa has a whole hazelnut in each bite. The Torinos have tiny slivers of nuts which provide a great texture to the rich filling. And the chocolate used is pure Swiss chocolate. I used to fill my suitcase with these to bring back from Switzerland the cradle of Chocolate.

The finest chocolates I have ever eaten are:

From the US:
Fiori Chocolatiers, Seattle, WA
Michael Recchiuti, San Francisco, CA

From Europe:
Amedei (Italy)
Slitti (Italy)
Bonnat (France)

For me, if I can't get Amedei or Bonnat, I'll pick Fiori first and Recchiuti second. Fiori has super intense high cacao chocolate but it just tastes a little different from other chocolatiers. It is a little more creamy - but still really really dark. I have had their truffles and those are simply the finest yet. Though Recchiuti is very close as well. On the European side it is just hard to go wrong with either Amedei or Slitti. Slitti and Fiori by the way I find similar in flavor profiles, and both are dark chocolate!

My personal favorite is anything by Michel Cluizel, and I was so surprised to see only one other person mention Cluizel chocolates here! The quality is consistently exceptional, and there are options for lovers of dark AND milk chocolate.

The best chocolate I have ever had is from a French chocolatier based in PA. I recently stayed at the Ritz in Miami and had to ask where these heavenly chocolates in my room came from. I just have to share my favorite chocolate shop with everyone - it is in Deadwood, South Dakota and it is called Chubby Chipmunk Chocolates. I sometimes have to make the 30 minute trip from my house to Deadwood just to stock up on their dark chocolate chips, or their truffles. Not to mention the owner and girl that work their are very nice and know the importance of a chocoholics chocolate needs. I once drove their, placed a $20 order, and realized that I had lost my debit card - the girl at the counter wouldn't let me leave without my order! Now how many places would do that?

Debra Winthrop Pollack wrote :

The best chocolate in the world, in my opinion,(and I make it my job to always search for the best chocolate wherever I go) is as follows:

1- Verbecke on Silverstradt in Bruges, Belgium
2- Friandises over the bridge from the City Center in Masstricht, Holland
3-Teuscher's champagne truffles--as the other commenter Karin pointed out, they are flown in weekly from Zurich--but did she also tell you that they are made with Dom Perignon! Teuscher's other truflles are no slouch either, and they are head and shoulders over Godiva, Neuhaus,Leonidas, Vosges, or the others mentioned. By the way, in Belgium, Godiva is just one of hundreds of brands of chocolates, and the version that they have there is very good, much better and different from what they sell in the U.S.Here, I believe that it was bought out by Campbell Soup! The quality is not the finest and they are not pure.
4-Bernard Callebaut- a relative of the famous Callebaut family from Belgium (the source of most, if not all fine Belgian chocolate) (one can get large bars of Callebaut at Williams-Sonoma) who came to the new world and opened chocolate shops. I first experienced this marvelous chocolate in Banff (where I had, in addition to his truffle creations, a hand made hazelnut ice cream dipped in chocolate and rolled in hazelnuts--to die for), then Calgary, and West Vancouver. One day, he opened up near me in Greenwich, CT, but now that store has closed and I don't know if he is still going strong elsewhere.
5- the handmade truffles served as a "lagniappe"(translation; freebie as a gesture of gratitude for your patronage) after dinner at The Four Seasons Restaurant in New York.
I have used Valrhona in baking, but I like Caleebaut much better. The former has a funny winey quality that I don't enjoy. The Domaine Carneros chocolates are ok, and I had wine filled chocolates at Fairview Winery (the one with the Goats de Roam wine--not a great wine) near Capetown, South Africa, but none of these compare, again in my opinion, with numbers 1-5 above.
Thank you for this opportunity to comment!
